Have you ever wondered what someone’s body language is trying to tell you? Or what subconscious signs they’re giving you with their actions? Well, short of taking a Psych 101 course, here are some of the best psychological tips and tricks that will make you view yourself and the people around you a bit differently.

1. When you laugh, you instinctively look to the person with whom you are most comfortable. What an easy way to see who your friends are in the room!

2. Another little test is to look at someone’s feet when they are talking to you. If their foot is pointing in your direction, they are at ease with you, and vice versa.

3. People tend to remember the first and last moments of an event more clearly. If you’re looking to remain on someone’s mind, like in an audition, try to be the first or last out of the room.

4. If you want to have a great chance at a second date, skip the boring dinner and take them to an exciting concert or amusement park. This way they will associate you with fun times, making them more inclined for round two.

5. Trying to get information from a spouse or relative? Remember that silence is golden! If someone isn’t giving you the answers you want, stay silent with direct eye contact and the person will feel more pressure to keep talking.

6. Work in customer service? People tend to be less bored and awkward while waiting in line if you have a mirror behind you. Either they enjoy looking at themselves, or they just like to judge other people.

7. If you think someone might speak ill of you, for example, in a work meeting, then sit next to them. Your proximity will often neutralize their self-confidence and they are less likely to deliver a hurtful blow to your reputation.

8. Be sincerely excited to see the boy or girl you fancy. Your excitement will almost guarantee their elation the next time they see you. As long as you aren’t stalking them…

9. Ask people for small favors. It trains their brain to think you like them even if you don’t.

10. Meeting someone’s parents for the first time? Have an upcoming interview? Pretend the person is your best friend, and your self-confidence will shoot through the roof.

11. Mirror body language whenever you can. This helps build trust and likability with whomever you’re interacting.

12. Cold hands? You might want to invest in some gloves. A warm handshake is more inviting than a cold one.

13. Laugh as much as you can even if the laughter starts out faked. Doing it enough will actually make you feel happier.

14. Teaching is the best way to learn. If someone will listen, teach them something you might need to remember on an upcoming test or evaluation.

15. Remember, memorizing someone’s name and using it in conversation with them will make that person find you charming and more likable.
